Our Inspiration

THE PROBLEM: UNNECESSARY SUFFERING OF MEDICALLY FRAGILE AND DYING CHILDREN:

The majority (80%) of the 4 million children worldwide and the 500,000 in the United States who live and die from life threatening and life limiting conditions suffer unnecessary physical and emotional pain.

Effective daily medical, emotional, and spiritual palliative care along with volunteer support delivered to the child and his/her family in a community setting can make a difference.

THE SOLUTION: PEDIATRIC PALLIATIVE CARE

The World Health Organization identifies Pediatric Palliative Care as an effective approach to caring for these children. The principles include: total care of the child's body, mind and spirit, and also involves giving support to the family.

It begins when illness is diagnosed, and continues regardless of whether or not a child receives treatment directed at the disease. Health providers must evaluate and alleviate a child's physical, psychological, and social distress.

Effective palliative care requires a broad multidisciplinary approach that includes the family and makes use of available community resources; it can be successfully implemented even if resources are limited. It can be provided in tertiary care facilities, in community health centers and even in children's homes.

Community Projects

Community-engagement based palliative care programs hold the key to alleviating unnecessary suffering for seriously ill and dying children. When a child in any part of the world is geographically located away from the children's hospital or emergency care center, they often lack the resources and/or the means of transportation to receive care when it is imminently
